Greg Dumas, Vice President Worldwide Sales, Xangati
We traveled by plane—not by longboat—but, like the Vikings, we were on a mission—inspired to take our message of infrastructure performance management (IPM) abroad—sans the pillaging and plundering and horned helmets, of course.
In all seriousness—and in keeping with my Danish theme—the Vikings actually were—first and foremost—explorers—setting out to conquer new worlds. Most of us would agree that virtualization represents a new world for IT and one that is an absolute rule changer for infrastructure management, requiring an entirely different approach. Like the Vikings, Xangati is on the forefront of exploring—and making available to a worldwide market—these new possibilities.
As vice president of worldwide sales, I could not think of a better place to mark Xangati’s official international debut than at VMworld Copenhagen—home of the fearless Vikings!
Although smaller in size than VMworld San Francisco, VMworld Copenhagen offered every bit as much in terms of show content and quality. The floor buzzed throughout the week with discussions on key virtualization issues, as attendees shared their implementation challenges and stories amongst themselves and exhibitors. With 113 companies exhibiting and 82 countries represented—making it a truly international event—the show schedule was also jam-packed with informative and useful sessions for the 6,000 attendees.
Xangati helped design and manage VMworld’s VDI vCloud—tracking all the VDI sessions happening at the show’s hands-on labs. With its real-time, continuous visibility across the whole infrastructure, including all elements—server, network, storage and end user terminals—the Xangati IPM solution enabled the heart of the labs to keep beating throughout VMworld Copenhagen. It did all of this—and ensured incredibly high performance—with traffic running from the conference to two remote data centers located back across the Atlantic in Virginia and Florida.
Approximately 6,000 labs were completed at the show with an astounding 56,435 virtual machines deployed! “vPerfect” was the most accurate one word description of the hands-on labs, according to a satisfied attendee. Thanks to the Netherlands’ Eric Sloof, you can watch the video right here.
Because attendee response to the labs was so positive—ahem, thanks to stellar management—VMware is even considering how they might be able host labs in the cloud throughout the year. Talk about a demonstration of cloud services working well!
Kendrick Coleman and David Davis’ breakout session on the “Top 10 Best Free Tools for vSphere Management” was also enormously popular – perhaps best validated by the fact that the session was repeated three times during the conference! The high interest in the session underscores the dramatic need for increased knowledge among VI administrators to help them more effectively manage their data centers. Focusing on the best free tools out there, the session also featured our own Xangati for ESX.
The session highlighted Xangati because of its unique ability to provide visibility into both the virtual network—with drill-down insights into VMs—as well as the physical side of the legacy network. This is something that no other IPM solution—let alone a FREE solution—offers today. By giving managers insights into what the application problems are—and what’s happening in the physical network—they can successfully manage and monitor their infrastructure—and accelerate their virtualization projects.
Here at Xangati, we believe that Xangati for ESX offers the highest degree of functionality of any free vSphere tool out there. It’s certainly rewarding to receive recognition from others in the industry as well.
On a personal note, I felt extremely proud watching how the international audience responded to the Xangati solution and its unique capabilities. The word is getting out; the Xangati name is being touted; and we had people specifically come look for us at the show. It’s huge.
Also apparently huge are Viking appetites! Attendees consumed more than 8,534 bananas, 5,342 apples and 3,485 pears—curious as to what monitoring tool they used to obtain those stats! Not surprisingly, soda, coffee and yes—9,000 bottles of Danish beer—were popular beverages.
The success of these types of events requires more than one oarsman. I am extraordinarily grateful to the VMware Show Tech Support Team for the opportunity to showcase the full functionality of the Xangati solution at VMworld Copenhagen. They were amazing! And, as usual, the Xangati team worked tirelessly and was an inspiration. Mange tak til alle!
As word continues to spread, I only anticipate more international triumphs and testaments to our virtual seaworthiness. Keep your eye on the horizon! Xangati—the virtual Viking—has set sail!
